The White House On the Top of the Hill [2nd installment]
Summer went by quickly, the house was still needing so much, but it would have to wait. Thanksgiving was coming fast and the boys were going to spend it with a friend from San Francisco, who was coming in by train.
Ra has been a dear friend for a long, long time, and she already missed the Burlyboys even though it had only been five months since the boys moved to Tucson. So the boys invited Ra to come and see the new home. Ra also happened to be a fantastic chef. Her skills were well known and it would be a treat for anyone to dine from her table. Now the question is who shall come? The invitations went out, Cecil, Maggie, and a few other neighbors and friends; "what about the other neighbor Sally"? Maggie put her foot down." NO! You will regret it"! Well O.K. What ever you say.
Later the boys brought this up. What is Maggie's problem with this woman Sally? What do we know about her? Her husband died eight years ago, Maggie told me that Cecil stepped in just before she would have lost her house. He straighten-up her paper work and now takes care of all that for her. Really! She is lucky to have him helping her. That was good of him. She can't do it herself ? She's pretty old. Maybe her husband took care of all that. Why don't they want us to meet her? Do you think she is Homophobic? She has been out here a long time. Maybe she is this Redneck rancher-woman.! When I take the dogs out for our walks I stay off her property. I'm afraid she might shoot at us. Be careful!
Ra came and went, she liked the place and what plans lay in-store for the new house, but Arizona? "What were you guys thinking"? "We love the desert".
One day Cecil showed up at the boys house. "You will be getting a check in the mail for twenty dollars; a rebate that I sent in, I used your name because they will only let me do it once, and I already have. Just endorse the check and give it to me. Oh and by the way, our neighbor Sally wanted me to give you guys these Tamales. Maggie and I are going away for Christmas, We're going to our son and his family's in Las Vegas". Great have a Merry Christmas and a very nice visit with your kids!
With this the Burlys thought this is our chance to meet Sally. We can take her up a poinsettia for Christmas.
Just before Christmas the boys did take up to the white house at the top of the hill (Sallys), a big poinsettia. They knocked on the front door several times, and finally a window opened slowly; "yeah? who's there". "Hello we're your new neighbors from down the hill". "Oh, Hi, come around to the side door". The boys went around to the side and Sally let them in.
Sallys house, to say the least, was full. She had paths to get around in. As she probaly was not used to having visitors, she hurried over to the dinning table, which was loaded high with piles of paper, dishes, and chach-ca, so much so that you could not focus on any one thing. She knocked stuff off of two chairs, and invited the boys to sit. House keeping was not something that interested her, and hadn't been done for a least a decade.
"Did you get the tamales"? "Yes, Thank You! And we have this poinsettia for you"."Oh, Thank You! Merry Christmas. I was not sure if Cecil would give them to you guys. I've been after him to introduce me to you! but he said that he was always too busy, or you guys were"." Thats funny we kept asking them about who lives here. So with the Tamales, and them out-of-town, we thought, now is our chance to meet you". The boys and Sally chatted for awhile and they decided to invite Sally down to have dinner at the boys house. Sally said I would love that, "Her Royal Highness never has me over" (she was talking about Maggie). "Well come for dinner"!
A couple of nights later Sally drove up to the boys house and a good time was had at dinner. After dinner Sally announced that her favorite program was on tonight. The boys looked at each other and asked, "oh yeah what's that?" (thinking Lawrence Welk was about to be said). "Queer as Folk"! "Queer as Folk? That's about to start, ya wana watch it?" one of the burly's said. As all gathered around the T.V. to watch Queer as Folk, Sally says at this point, "I just love this show! it is so educational"!
..............to be continued.
